Rising damp is a problem that could be found in most types of buildings.  Essentially all buildings are enveloped by natural moisture that tries to infuse into the substrate of a building.  Substrates like brick and stone are naturally porous, meaning they will allow moisture to enter or travel throw them without the assistance of a damp proof membrane course or rising damp treatment.  When a new building is erected, a rising damp treatment is commonly installed in the form of a (DPC) into the substrate of the walls to counteract rising damp, however if this process does not exist or becomes flawed the most common conclusion is rising damp. 

Unattractive, probably unhealthy and resulting in heat loss due to the conductivity of the walls substrate and some times leading to timber deterioration in some older properties, it is essential to recognize if there is a rising damp problem and address the relevant dampness as soon as possible.  In most cases it is easier and more reliable to do this by contacting a specialist in rising damp who will be associated within the correct procedure and application of rising damp. 

 

How to tell if you need Rising Damp Treatment

Conveniently, the obvious indication of rising damp is very easy to identify. The most common and obvious signs of rising damp are a "tide-mark" on the wall above the skirting boards of up to a metre in height, peeling wallpaper and in some cases the signs of white efflorescent salts, these will appear due to the water within the substrate being pushed to the surface.  Please note that rising damp only appears at ground floor level, this is moisture deriving from the soil which infuses the substrate of the wall that causes this problem.  If you have damp problems on or above the first floor, it could be that you have penetrating damp or a condensation problem.

Rising damp treatment frequently involves fixing the existing damp proof course, or the installation of a new one. The most general procedure is done by drilling holes in a sequence around the affected wall and injecting a damp proof treatment, we then advise the replacement of any salt contaminated plasterwork.  If the plasterwork is not properly replaced using a salt retardant plaster, the salts that have contaminated the plaster may keep on absorbing moisture from the air, and even after the new damp proof course has been installed, this will give the appearance of dampness.
