7. How do you apply your Aqua Protection wall coating products?

For application of our Aqua Protection wall coatings we follow all the necessary steps to ensure that there is no hassle for you, we take care of the job with these 9 steps:

1. We do all the external building work before application, for example, fixing any cracks or re-rending.
2. We mask up all doors, with masking tape (but still allow for access) and then lay down sheets to ensure we do not damage any of the surrounding areas (including gardens, ponds, doors, driveways, plants, and windows).
3. We apply our Aqua Pro Sealant. This seals any areas that moisture could penetrate. (For brick and pebble dashed houses, we apply a similar sealant with a bonding primer).
4. Apply the top coats, with our exclusive spray machine which is imported from the States. We make sure the user of the machine has gone through special training. The process ensures the coating is applied up to 20 times the thickness of standard paint job.
5. We then remove all masking and protective covertings.
6. Clean up and inspect the surroundings.
7. We then will walk you around your property, to ensure that you are happy with everything that has been carried out before final payment.

12. What properties do you not take on?

We will not take work on for grade 1 buildings or historic buildings; however, there are companies out there that will assist with your renovation.

We will however consider projects involving grade 2 listed buildings, and will take them on to make sure they are fully protected with our 25 year guarantee. With grade 2 listings, we aim to ensure that we keep the buildings character while fully protecting the building with our restoration.

We also will not work on buildings that are structurally unsafe, or ones that we judge to be dangerous for health and safety reasons. We also refuse the right to take a job on if we feel there is a risk of flooding.

For your safety we will only accept your signature on a contract if our team believe you are not under the influence of drink, drugs, or acting in an unusual manner. This is to make sure you do not sign anything you may later regret.

14. I bought a can of exterior masonry paint which gives a guarantee so what's so good about yours?

Always read into that guarantee you receive. We can almost assure you that in your guarantee you have in your masonry paint tin you will find so many get out clauses, that the guarantee is broken when you apply the first lick of paint. Firstly for the majority of those guarantees the paint needs to be applied by a Dulux approved decorator? Have you ever heard of a Dulux approved decorator?

Then getting in touch with a paint company and proving that it was their paint you applied can be extremely tricky and it is more than likely your claim will fail, leaving you feeling like you have been ripped off. Paint companies only put those guarantees on the tin to give you an extra incentive to buy the product. Reading into the guarantee a bit more you will also see that you need to apply the paint in a certain way, and if you do not follow this you will void the guarantee.

Also, what exactly are they guaranteeing you against; the majority of the paint companies do not cover you against certain weather conditions, which obviously you have no control over.

15. Why is it a bad idea to Paint the outside of my house if I haven't done it before?

In theory painting is not difficult right? Well in fact when you think about it is, make sure you consider all of the following points:

1. How much are the materials going to cost?
2. How much time is this going to take me?
3. What equipment am I going to have to buy/hire?
4. If I do this job, when I am going to need to repaint?
5. Does my house have any pre existing conditions that I have not thought of?

The answers to those questions may go something like this:

1. I am going to need a lot of materials, paint, paint thinner, primer, paintbrushes, rollers, roller cages, paint trays, sheets, ladders and safety equipment to name just a few.
2. The average house can take 100 hours (of man hours) to paint and that is without the preparation and the cleanup.
3. If I do not have any of the equipment in question 1, then there are going to be costly expenses.

31. You say your wall coating will lower our heating bills? How?

The simple answer to this question is our product prevents heat loss. For a start the normal product we apply to homes is 20 times thicker than a regular layer of paint. Our product also has fillers that will reduce wind chill, and therefore, warm up walls. Because of this, you will see a direct saving in your heating bill.

As we have all been told hundreds of times damp problems can cause health problems such as respiratory problems and headaches. We will not use this as a way to sell to you, but simply to provide you with some informed information, with no obligation to sign any contract whatsoever.

It depends, in many cases yes; however, your surveyor will inform you at the survey stage, if it is required. We will include a price for whatever method we deem to be safest, this will appear in our quotation.

38. It says on your website that you apply coatings with a spray machine? Do you apply any other types of wall coatings?

We are experts in the spraying method, and this is why we do not use any other method to apply our coatings, if we did then we would be offering a second rate service. We use a high pressured airless spray machines to apply all wall coatings; this ensures the coating is applied in the best way possible.

There are other methods of application such as the trowel method, which we do not believe to be the best way of application and here is why:

• The trowel method rips the old render off. This can sometimes rip out the mortar joints. This can cause movement of the wall and may invalidate any home insurance you may have.
• The trowel method takes around double the time.
• The trowel method will leave double the mess.
• Check the prices? The trowel method is much more expensive (sometimes up to 3 times the amount!)

39. My house was coated 10 years ago by another company, and there's now a small problem with the wall coating but the contractor who did it has gone out of business, is my guarantee worthless?

When a company goes out of business the chances of a guarantee being worth anything are next to none. We at AQUA PROTECTION advice you check every possible avenue including the citizens advice bureau and specific solicitors. Also, double and triple check the guarantee for any warranties which you may be able to claim against. However, claiming back on warranties on useless guarantees is near impossible.

Before you tear your guarantee up, make sure you check all available avenues.

41. If I request a FREE survey, do I have to buy from you?

Of course not, a free survey is free. We will never pressurise you into making a decision. In fact our visits rarely last over an hour, during this time we will not hold a sales meeting with you, unlike some of our competitors. Our visits consist of viewing examples, viewing paint samples, and a discussion surrounding your project (which is all informal). In this meeting we will also survey and measure you house to give you a price suited to you. It is essential that you tell our surveyor how long you are available for on the day of survey. There is no point for us to come down to do a full survey if you only have 20 minutes available, this way we can arrange a time that suits you better.

Remember, the choice to employ a company should always be yours and nobody else’s, regardless of what some sales persons will have you thinking.

42. Do you undertake rendering ONLY jobs?

We do not just take on rendering jobs. If you want to have a wall rendered then you should contact a tradesman who will do this for you. This is because (unless offered as part of a package) wall rendering would not be financially worthwhile for us as a company.

43. Can you give me an estimate of cost over the phone or by email?

As no two jobs are the same, unfortunately we cannot do this for you. It would be impossible for us to give you an estimate, without seeing the property. This is because the price that we give you is 100% specific to your project. Remember our surveyors will be more than happy to provide you with a free survey.

We do not offer free quotations unless you are the owner of the house. This is due to privacy and legal reasons. If you are in the process of purchasing a house, then when you have closed we will be more than happy to provide you with a free quote.

51. How do I remove textured wall coatings from surfaces?

If you have coating everywhere then the likelihood is your job has been carried out by a cowboy, as any reputable company would never leave any mess whatsoever.

If (for some reason) you do need to remove a wall coating from a surface here are the best ways to do so:

Remember as wall coatings are fully waterproof, you will not be able to remove it with water, so your best choice is to use white sprit, with a cloth and rub it off. Allow the surface to mist over and wipe down with a separate cloth.

For glass surfaces you need to do the same thing, but you may need to remove some of the paint with a scraper, but be careful not to scratch the glass with the scraper.

Paint spots on a driveway are tough to remove, the only way to get rid of them is with a wire brush and a high pressured hose.

52. How will you protect my fish pond?

Fish ponds are protected with a tarpaulin cover, as long as this covers the whole surface.

Covering up your pond is a very serious matter, as if there is no protection, then unnoticeable film would be able to settle on top of the water. This film cuts off the oxygen supply to the fish. Resin based products should never be introduced to any water supply whatsoever. This is another effective way to find out if you are being conned by a cowboy, as they rarely place any protection over ponds.

53. A builder told me that textured coatings may not be a good idea for my house? Is that right?

Well the only thing we can say to that is different people have different opinions.

However, our team is headed by an expert builder who would completely disagree with that statement. Remember if a builder cannot do the job then he will more than likely try and coax you into thinking that what he can do for you is the best method possible. So ask him if he guarantees his outer surface work for 25 years? The chances are he does not, and instead he will be back round in 2 – 3 years applying more paint and taking more of your hard earned money.

58. Are there any hidden costs?

Our prices never have any hidden costs whatsoever. Our surveyors are not trained salesmen, they are trained surveyors. They are there to ensure we give you the best price and advice possible.

Our surveyors will issue you with a price after their survey, and this will be the price you pay, (unless there are any changes by yourselves). This price will include; materials, VAT, scaffolding (if required) and labour. You will not find a ‘hidden’ charge has been added at any point.

We offer over 35,000 colours and it would be impractical to list every single colour. This is why we have listed our most popular colours. We will do our upmost to match any colour you can find (please remember that some colours have been trademarked, to make copying illegal, so matching the colour would be illegal).

We will always ensure you are happy with your colour before we start working, we ensure this through meticulous samples.

61. Can this home improvement work contribute to my HIPS pack? (home information pack)

Yes it can. As of December 2008, all domestic properties that are offered for sale in Scotland will be required to produce a Home Report before they can be placed on the market.

The Home Report is to provide potential buyers with more information about the property before they consider making an offer. A copy of the Home Report should be made available to all interested parties considering making an offer. Failure to provide a copy of this document could lead to a penalty charge of up to £500.

The Home Report consists of three main documents: the Energy Report, Single Survey and Property Questionnaire.

The Energy Report (EPC) is a document that provides information regarding the energy performance of the building, mostly the energy usage, carbon dioxide emissions and fuel costs of the building.

The building is given a rating on a scale of A - G (A being the most efficient, G the least efficient). We have carried out many installations to properties taking them from a 'G' rating to as high as a 'B' rating with the energy solutions we offer, you would also be issued a guarantee for 25 years. This guarantee will form part of your Home Report, making it more attractive to purchasers when buying your property.

As we have said before there are exceptions to the rule, but in the majority of cases no, we cannot.

The rough guide generally is if you require work on less than 30 square metres of wall then we cannot help you.

The reason why our website and our FAQ is so packed with information is because we do not care for using leaflets as we believe they are environmentally unfriendly. We are the only coating company in Scotland who choose not to market through leaflet form, because of the environment.

Yes as we have said above, both of our main coatings cure all damp forms. They also cure mould, algae growth and green walls.

This is more than likely rising damp. Rising damp is moisture which has come up from the ground. We can cure this problem, with a chemical injection into your mortar joints. Please see our rising damp section for further information.
